...If you are looking for overly brutal death metal - go elsewhere. However, if you enjoyed the beginnings of technical death metal more than where it eventually went (Decrepit Birth, Faceless, Severed Savior), then this is for you. Does this sound like Death? Yes. When you are into the faster stuff of the band it would be wise to listen before buying. They have something going for them but their ideas need to exploited much better than they are right now. ... Dagon’s sound is mainly melodic death metal, with influences of thrash, power, brutal death and occasionally even some 80’s rock ‘n roll. ...Well, what can be said is that 'Blodskam' is a rather pleasant experience. The band presents a potent mix of droning industrial and mechanic sounds (with loads of repetition) en truly cold and martial melodies. ...All in all Blodskam is a pretty impressive disc from start to finish. Some of the tracks do sound kind of the same at times, and I would have personally preferred to see the drums balanced a little more evenly in this prominently layered, guitar heavy mix, but those are really just minor quibbles. ...It's very soon apparent that DSOU are "an open minded black metal idea which doesn't give attention to the present global music trends and neither to the trends inside the present black metal underground". Sigh, where have I heard that before... Only in different wording. All (I guess?) the lyrics are printed inside the booklet, but seriously, not many of us speak their language...

So, only three tracks, but well over 30 minutes of music. Can they make such long tracks work? To answer it briefly : Yes and no, and let me start with the yes part first.. read the review here

...The Serbs bring two lengthy tracks (and an ambient epilogue) that work well: there is definitely a sense of estrangement during the slower moments, while a notion of aggression is always present. Despite the length of the songs, there is ample room for variety and the instruments are played more than well. In other words, the two compositions are effective (plus a tad simple, perhaps) and the formula Dead Shell Of Universe has opted for sounds convincing. ....This album seems to be focusing on violent battles and the story. Yeah they've thrown in a few fucks out there but that isn't much. There's barely any explicit lyrics on here than any of the other GWAR albums, but it's still enjoyable. So if your new to GWAR and you don't like that whole raping violence, then this album is really for you, as well as we huge GWAR fans. I'll give this album a smacking good 4.5/5. ...So, what do we have here? Well, to put it simple and straightforward, a fucking great album. The decision to write songs that are based more on the guitars was brilliant. The music is super heavy with a mighty Thrash addition to go with. Unfortunately the Hungarians kill the nice thing they might have had going on by a much too shrill snare drum. ...From Afar is, without a doubt, Ensiferum’s most epic record to date. This is because the band has added a fairly heavy symphonic element to their sound this time around, which is apparent when hearing the first track after the intro, From Afar. The first twenty seconds of it is very epic and grand sounding metal; almost like a Rhapsody track, minus the cheese. After this, the song breaks into the traditional Ensiferum opening track, with double-time snare hits, fast tremolo palm-muted riffs, and very folky sounding choirs and leads. All this is backed by that strong symphonic element, and when it all comes together it makes for one of Ensiferum’s most original and best songs yet. If Ensiferum, Rhapsody, and Bal-Sagoth were able to legally marry and have a completely legitimate child, I have a feeling it would sound JUST like this... rating 94/100 read the review here

......From Afar is a very solid album as a whole. Ensiferum may pick up new fans with their new offering by including the Nightwish and Turisas elements referenced earlier, but may lose others with their possibly gimmicky antics. However, if you are a fan of the band and Finnish metal in general, you will like this album. At times the album is Ensiferum paint by numbers, but there are just enough new ideas thrown in to keep the listener interested for more than one listen....

...Many will fail to see the advances that the band have made with their songwriting, citing their tendency to always go one chorus too far, or casting tracks like Picture Perfect to one side for being too technically weak or King Of Nothing for not being expansive enough. However, from where I’m standing, the man in the middle, Zeuss, has minimised the effect of these inefficiencies by doing a terrific job of integrating what Shadows Fall do so expertly already. He has bolstered the drum and bass side of things to provide a solid backbone allowing for the rockier material to sound lucid and yet dirty enough to sit comfortably alongside the thrash-heavy rampage that occurs when they floor the pedal. ..The album incorporates a recipe of thrash metal beats, hardcore riffs and metalcore breakdowns. Vocals for me are much stronger in terms of passion and structure. ...Bottomline. This is an album you are going to want to have. It is pure metalcore. The band is in top form, ready to go, and destined to explode. Hopefully, they will come back to town, I would love to see them (they were scheduled once a couple of years ago, but got canceled due to low ticket sales! Unbelievable). ......Overall fellow friends and wankers, Skullreader might be 2009’s greatest achievement in the black metal world. At least for the first half of the year because I find no apparent flaws with this dare I say it masterpiece. The structuring of passages and riffs are incredibly well handled. The synths are perfectly fitted to complement the guitars as well as adding an ethereal element to the subtle aggression. And closing off the album is the talented and intricate songwriting resulting in five stellar songs and one gem of an album. If you like shoe gaze, dark ambient, psychedelic, and black metal I see no reason why you shouldn’t check this out.

...The guitars actually kill, since Tomas and Marcus seem to collaborate well together. The rhythmic riffs with the schizophrenic melodies on top sound like a soundtrack for a serial killer and the solid as fuck rhythm section is supporting the music great. I guess that it is not what someone would call a top Death Metal album, but I am damn sure that it is something someone would call a fucking great album for his/her collection. ...One could list Sanctification along with Zyklon, Blood Red Throne and Aeon. These groups all hail from Scandinavia, include black metal musicians, but prefer to play death metal with an American taste. Santification’s second album, Black Reign features members of Dark Funeral and In Battle, but has more in common, style-wise, with Cannibal Corpse and Deicide than the above-mentioned groups. ...Korgonthurus makes the most of a barebones, honest mix. The guitars are raw and noisy but through this they convey much of the emotional power. Drums are tinny and just right, the bass does what it needs to, and Corvus creates a psychotic atmosphere whether he's using his Horna style vocals or the more talky, creepy expressions as in "Mustan Usvan Kohdussa". I'm not sure of the album's potential appeal to a wide range of black metal fans, but those that appreciate the desolate, the stripped down and penetrating, no-frills melancholy should give it a spin...rating 7.5/10 read the review here

The production is fantastic, all vocals and instrumentation fit perfectly across all tracks, as a single one hour work the album is a travel worth undertaking. As mentioned earlier, some of the riffs and melodies may seem as if you've heard them a thousand times before, but they simply do not hinder the impressive whole of Stone's Reach. Be'lakor have crafted the very best melodic Australian death I have heard to date. ...Stone's Reach is a decent follow-up to The Frail Tide. Musically it is very outstanding and features all the good qualities Be'lakor has, like the chaotic cymbal fills; interesting and progressive song structures; great guitar work and dark, growly vocals, but the lack of individuality hurts this album pretty bad. It seems that the guys in Be'lakor got used to their formula and while the results are still good, this album is definitely not as exciting as The Frail Tide was... rating 3.4/5 read the review here
